West Side Story Information

With new musicals popping up every year, it never hurts to revisit the classics. Fifty years after the debut of West Side Story on Broadway, it remains to be one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. With a score of standards that includes “Tonight,” “America,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere”, the music for West Side Story is widely regarded as top notch- among the best ever written. The musical once won two Tony Awards in 1958 and the revival has even managed to win a Tony amongst a lineup of all new musicals in 2009.

This groundbreaking new production offers a bold new design to create a fresh experience emulating the original show’s raw emotion, heart and power. On the mean streets of New York City set in the ‘50s, two gangs are in a long-lasting duel. The Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, grapple with the difficulties of assimilating into American society while the Jets, the "American" gang, are far from welcoming the gang into their territory. In the midst of this rivalry, the Jets founder, Tony, falls in love with a beautiful Sharks' girl, Maria, and a clash between the groups ensues. By facing the ongoing issues of culture, race and community, West Side Story remains as contemporary as ever. As part of their US tour, Boston is among one of the last cities for the musical to visit, playing at the Colonial Theater from June 14th to July 9th.
