Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Lady Gaga built her career with her bare hands, getting her start in New York Cityâ€™s Lower East Side and writing songs for other pop stars before making a name for herself. In just a couple years time, Lady Gaga has cemented herself as one of the biggest pop stars since Madonna, and the power-hungry star is still on the rise. As of May 2010, Gaga has sold over 15 million albums and over 40 million singles worldwide, been named in Timeâ€™s annual 100 most influential people in the world list and no. 4 on Forbes 100 Most Powerful and Influential celebrities of 2010.
Released in August of 2008, her debut album, The Fame, reached number one in the UK, Canada, Austria, Germany and Ireland, peaking at two on the US Billboard 200 chart and topped Billboard Dance/Electronic chart. Its first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Faceâ€ became international number-one hits. The album later earned a total of six Grammy Award nominations and 2 wins.. The 24-year-old New Yorkerâ€™s debut spent a total of 75 weeks in the charts. She released a re-packaged version of the album with eight new tracks, The Fame Monster, the following year. â€œBad Romanceâ€ off The Fame Monster was a global chart-topping success and became the most viewed video of all time on the internet.
Gaga released her second studio album and third major release in May 2011. This album, entitled "Born This Way," sold 1.108 million copies in the first week in the US and debuted atop the Billboard 200. It has received 3 Grammy Award nominations and Gaga has been ranked fourth on Billboard's list of top money makers of 2011. Hits on this album include "Born This Way," "Judas" and "The Edge of Glory." In the wake of her album Gaga kicked off an accompanying tour entitled "The Born This Way Ball" in April 2012 at Seoul's Olympic Stadium in South Korea. The tour will hit North America and Canada later this year. She also has another album "Artpop" in the works, announced to be released in early 2013.
