The 2010 Kentucky Derby will mark the 136th annual horse race. The value of last yearâ€™s race was 2,177,000 in stakes. The Derby has been held at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky since it opened in 1875. The Horseplayers Association of North America voted the track at #5 compared to other 65 Thoroughbred racetracks throughout the country. It serves as one of the most important events in all of horse racing, as it is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, ahead of the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Most people find the Kentucky Derby to be the most thrilling and popular event out of the three. The official Churchill Downs attendance for 2009 was 153,563.
