Brief History of the Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are one of sports' most storied franchises. Since being established in 1901, Boston's fan base has grown into one of the most devoted in all of sports. The Boston Americans (as they were known as at the time) won the first World Series in 1903, and have since won championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, and 2013. In 2004, led by the bats of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez and the arms of Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez, the Sox made a historic comeback against the rival Yankees to win the American League Championship after trailing 3-0 in the series. To this date, they are still the only team to come back from down 3-0 in a postseason series to win in MLB history. They went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to take their first world championship in 86 years.
After being swept out of the playoffs in 2005 and finishing in third place in 2006, the 2007 Sox team returned with a vengeance. Red Sox tickets sold at a record pace right from Opening Day. Jonathan Papelbon was dominant in the closer role, Mike Lowell had a career season, and AL Rookie of the Year Dustin Pedroia led a core of young players. That year, the Sox won 96 regular season games; including 20 by Cy Young runner-up Josh Beckett, 17 by veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, and 15 from Daisuke Matsuzaka in his first season outside of Japan. On September 1, rookie right-hander Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in just his second Major League start. The '07 World Series campaign solidified the Red Sox as one of the top MLB teams of the decade.
The Sox opened their 2008 in Japan against the A's. Jon Lester became the second Sox pitcher to toss a no-no in 2 years, shutting down the Kansas City Royals at Fenway. They went to the playoffs as the Wild Card team, beating the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS, but eventually lost in the ALCS in seven games to the Tampa Bay Rays. 2009 concluded in an ALDS rematch with LA, but this time around the Angels were ready to play spoiler en route to their second championship series appearance in five years.
The Boston front office went back to work in the offseason, acquiring free agent starter John Lackey while extending Beckett's contract. The injury-plagued campaign led Boston to finish third behind the Yankees and Rays in the AL East at 89-73.
Recent years have been disappointing for Red Sox fans, as the team has made the playoffs just once in the last six seasons, but made the most of that one postseason appearance. In 2013, the Red Sox shocked the baseball world by rebounding from a last place finish in 2012 with a World Series victory. Unlike in 2004 and 2007, the Red Sox claimed the title at Fenway Park, the first time the Sox clinched at home in 95 years. All of New England had rallied around the team more than ever before, as the victory came just six months after the Boston Marathon bombings.
