Brief History of the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are one of sports' most storied franchises. Since being established in 1901, Boston's fan base has grown into one of the most devoted in all of sports. The Boston Americans (as they were known as at the time) won the first World Series in 1903, and have since won championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018. In 2004, led by the bats of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez and the arms of Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez, the Sox made a historic comeback against the rival Yankees to win the American League Championship after trailing 3-0 in the series. To this date, they are still the only team to come back from down 3-0 in a postseason series to win in MLB history. They went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to take their first world championship in 86 years.

After breaking "the curse" in 2004, winning championships became a theme in Boston as the Red Sox won it all in 2007, 2013 and 2018. Even in down years, it seems like the Red Sox are always in playoff contention. One of the highlights of their recent success was rebounding from a last place finish in 2012 with a World Series victory in 2013. Unlike in 2004 and 2007, the Red Sox claimed the title at Fenway Park, the first time the Sox clinched at home in 95 years. All of New England had rallied around the team more than ever before, as the victory came just six months after the Boston Marathon bombings. 2018 was another special year for the Boston Red Sox. They claimed their 3rd Division title in a row and broke 100 wins for the first time since 1946. Finishing with 105 wins they broke a team record that had held since 1912. That regular season momentum carried them through the playoffs as they dispatched of the Yankee and Astros before defeating the Dodgers in 5 games in the World Series.
